1/7/2013 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM
In January, the Friends of the Mill Valley Library will present film biographies of two American musicians whose rags to riches stories transformed their innate musical talent into worldwide acclaim.
Walk the Line (2005)
January 7th, Monday @ 7:30 p.m.
Joaquin Phoenix stars as Johnny Cash and Reese Witherspoon plays his wife and musical collaborator June Carter. The film traces the life story of Cash, largely self-taught as he begins to write songs, perform and record. After divorcing his first wife, he woos June Carter who initially rejects him in large part because of his recurring drug addiction. Eventually he wins her over and they go on to a glorious performing and recording career. In this film, Joaquin Phoenix chooses to sing Cash's songs himself. Roger Ebert wrote, "Knowing Johnny Cash's albums more or less by heart, I closed my eyes to focus on the soundtrack and decided that, yes, that was the voice of Johnny Cash I was listening to. The closing credits make it clear it's Joaquin Phoenix doing the singing, and I was gob-smacked". Reese Witherspoon won an Oscar for Best Actress. Joaquin Phoenix was nominated for Best Actor. The film was also nominated for Best Costumes, Best Film Editing and Best Sound Mixing.
Doors open at 7:00. This series is sponsored by The Friends of the Mill Valley Library. For more Programs and Events at the Library, see the Library Events Calendar.
