Feminine Forms
Judith Williams

I express myself through visual metaphors and symbols, free associating thoughts and feelings with images. In this series, a dress form and bodice were the motivating symbols. As I worked, I thought about femininity, family, childhood, and adulthood.

With a desire to incorporate text in my work, I compose and paint with dictionary pages, architectural blueprints, sewing pattern paper, novels, comics, Asian calligraphic papers, phone book pages, and maps.

I use encaustic paint, made with a combination of beeswax and resin, intending to reveal and conceal parts of images and words. With encaustic paint, I can layer, glue and paint at the same time.

I think about seeing below the surface and transparencies, or looking through. It’s the hidden levels, the unconscious, and psychological undertones that intrigue me.
