White Nights (1985)

A cold war drama featuring a Russian ballet dancer Nikolai (Mikhail Baryshnikov) and an American tap dancer Raymond (Gregory Hines). Nikolai had defected to the West, but the plane he is on crash-lands in Siberia where he is recognized. In an effort to get him to dance again in Leningrad, the KGB contacts Raymond a black American who had defected to the Soviet Union. To convince him, the KGB also uses Nikolai's old flame, former ballerina Galina (Helen Mirren). After an initial period of racial and artistic friction, the two dancers (and defectors in opposite directions) become strong friends. They practice and perform together. But when Raymond finds that his wife Darya (Isabella Rossellini) is pregnant, he decides he must leave the Soviet Union. Nikola joins Raymond in planning to escape, assisted by Galina, who still has feelings for Nikolai. The film is notable for the dancing of Hines and Baryshnikov and for the music; two songs, each nominated for Best Original Song - “Say You, Say Me” by Lionel Richie and “Separate Lives” written by Stephen Bishop.

Doors open at 7:00. This series is sponsored by The Friends of the Mill Valley Library. For more Programs and Events at the Library, see the Library Events Calendar.
