The Piano (1993)
Monday, February 10th, 7:30 PM
A mute woman, Ada (Holly Hunter) along with her young daughter Flora (Anna Paquin), and her prized piano, arrive in 1850s New Zealand for an arranged marriage to wealthy landowner Alisdair Stewart (Sam Neill). Ada is mute and communicates with the world only through her piano and sign language interpreted by Flora. When the arranged marriage does not work, Stewart leaves the piano on the beach where Ada goes to play it. Baines (Harvey Keitel), a roughhewn neighbor who lives alone and who has affected Maori tattoos on his face hears the music. Fascinated, he trades land to Stewart for the piano and then inveigles Ada into a seductive scheme to earn it back. Roger Ebert calls Paquin’s performance "one of the most extraordinary examples of a child's acting in movie history. She probably has more lines than anyone else in the film, and is as complex, too." The Piano was nominated for 8 Oscars and won 3. In addition to Paquin, Holly Hunter won for Best Actress and writer/director Jane Campion won for Best Screenplay.
