Law enforcement, criminal investigation, patrol, traffic, crime prevention, and other public safety duties are provided by the Mill Valley Police Department under the direction of Chief J. Angel Bernal.
Police Chief J. Angel Bernal oversees the operations of 21 sworn positions, including two lieutenants, four patrol sergeants, a detective sergeant, two detectives (one serving as Juvenile Resource Officer), four corporals, and eight patrol officers (including two that are motorcycle officers). Non-sworn personnel include two parking enforcement officers, one community service officer, three administrative clerks, and one volunteer.
The mission of the Mill Valley Police Department is to sustain an environment in which people can live healthfully, move about safely and feel confident that they and their property are protected from criminal harm, the hazard of fire and natural or people-caused disasters, and to create a climate of security within the community by protecting life, property and individual rights.
Community policing is a collaboration between the police and the community that makes all members active allies in the effort to enhance the safety and quality of neighborhoods. Trust is the value that links the components of community partnership and problem solving. Our goal is to work with residents to support the community to create a safer city.
NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH - USAonWATCH
The Mill Valley Police Department urges all residents to join with their neighbors and become the "eyes and ears" of their communities, reporting suspicious behavior, looking out for elderly residents and being involved in crime prevention and disaster safety planning. The MVPD offers assistance to all residents (whether they are in a Neighborhood/Homeowner Association or not) in forming a Neighborhood Watch program. For information on the program or to schedule a meeting, please contact CSO Sheryl Patton at 415.389.4100 x4118 or email@example.com.
The MVPD has recently begun sending "Crime Alert" emails to residents that have signed up to receive these messages. We strongly urge residents to signup for our eNews service (scroll down and click on "Police Press Releases") so that they may receive these alerts. Police staff will use "Crime Alerts" to notify residents of recent activity, updates on recent cases and safety reminders.
