Business Task Force

The mission of the Business Task Force is to encourage a healthy, vibrant local business community in Mill Valley with an appropriate mix of resident-serving businesses, while also preserving the City’s unique small-town character.

The Mill Valley City Council appointed the Business Task Force (BTF) in the spring of 2008. The BTF held eight public meetings to provide business owners, landlords and residents the opportunity to offer suggestions and voice their concerns. The Task Force investigated best practices for the City and Chamber of Commerce to support the local business community and researched numerous potential initiatives.

In a study session on June 1, 2009, the BTF presented a draft report to the City Council, Chamber of Commerce and business community. The BTF recommended the City of Mill Valley establish a Business Advisory Board to adopt an economic development funding plan and create and execute marketing programs to promote Mill Valley businesses both locally and regionally. Additional recommendations included strengthening City/business partnerships and permit approval processes, improving the City’s cleanliness, infrastructure and ambiance and implementing a pilot “local shopper” parking permit program for downtown.

Next steps include the creation and appointment of the Business Advisory Board, an assessment of the feasibility and fiscal impacts of the BTF recommendations by City staff, and a review of the proposed economic development funding plan once the impact of the state budget crisis on City revenues is known. The adoption of the final BTF report is slated for early fall.
