USA Water Polo Olympian Congratulates
Youth Swim Scholarship Recipients from Marin City
Friday, March 7th 4:30 – 5:30pm
Mill Valley Aquatics & Fitness Center
180 Camino Alto Mill Valley, CA. 94941

Four-time Olympic medal winner and three-time U.S. water polo world champion Heather Petri will surprise 10 Marin City youth on March 7 at the Mill Valley Community Center by awarding them certificates Heather Petrifor completing a two-month swim scholarship program for disadvantaged kids. The children are not aware that she’ll be attending. Petri, a Bay Area native, won an Olympic gold medal in London in 2012, a silver medal in 2000 at Sydney and again in 2008 in Beijing, and a bronze medal in 2004 at Athens, all with Team USA. She’s also a three-time gold-medal winner during the World Aquatics Championships. Petri was born and raised in Oakland, and graduated from UC Berkeley.

The 10 youth are part of a successful swim scholarship program co-run by Mill Valley Recreation and the Sustainable Sports Foundation in San Rafael. Mill Valley Recreation provides discounted swim lessons taught by a qualified instructor for which the Sustainable Sports Foundation pays each registrant’s costs.

The Sustainable Sports Scholarship Program, which recruits from youth organizations, such as Boys and Girls Clubs and Performing Stars of Marin in Marin City and the Canal District in San Rafael, started in 2013 with a two-week pilot program. It now runs year-round, sponsoring children aged 6 to 12. The program not only teaches them how to swim and to remain safe in, on and around the water, but also inspires them to become physically fit and teaches leadership and life skills.

“The studenMC kids in poolts have not only improved their swim skills, but also have gained confidence, self-maturity, general awareness and an improved positive attitude about the community,” said Katie Raphael, Program Director of the MLK Bayside Chapter of the Boys and Girls Club in Marin City, from which the youth were recruited.

“This program is a great example of the Marin community coming together to create something tangible that benefits everybody. Not only are the students learning a lifesaving skill but, they are seeing firsthand how people can come together and help each other. It is wonderful to be a part of something that gives back and I’m excited to see where this goes,” said Kat Reisinger, Aquatics and Fitness Supervisor for the Mill Valley Recreation Department.
On Friday, March 7 between 4:30 – 5:30 p.m. Petri will hand out the students’ Certificate of Completion during their last lesson of the eight-week swim scholarship program. Photographers are allowed, and photos can be provided as well. Brief interviews with Petri can also be arranged.
