Monday Night Movies: Ray (2004)
1/14/2013 7:30 PM - 9:30 PM
In January, the Friends of the Mill Valley Library will present film biographies of two American musicians whose rags to riches stories transformed their innate musical talent into worldwide acclaim.
January 14th, Monday @ 7:30 p.m.
Jamie Foxx plays Ray Charles but it is Ray Charles who we hear singing in the film. Foxx had the opportunity to work with Charles before he died, so the film has Charles' blessing. Also starring are Kerry Washington as wife Della Robinson and Regina King as Margie Hendricks Ray's other major lover. Ray Charles Robinson went totally blind at the age of 7. Ray was sent to the Florida School for Deaf and Blind where he developed his musical talent and began to perform. With both parents dead, at 15 he went to Seattle (as far away from Florida as possible) where he performed and wrote songs. His big chance came when he signed with Atlantic Records. “I Got a Woman"--a mixture of gospel, blues and jazz--brought him national acclaim. His career was interrupted by numerous drug arrests and time in detox. Jamie Foxx won the Oscar for Best Actor. Ray also won the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing and was nominated for 4 other Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Director (Taylor Hackford), Best Costumes and Best Editing..
Doors open at 7:00. This series is sponsored by The Friends of the Mill Valley Library. For more Programs and Events at the Library, see the Library Events Calendar.
