First Friday: 100 Years of Mountain Play

In the summer of 1913, the first Mountain Play was staged on Mt. Tamalpais. People from near and far hiked the eight-mile uphill trek or boarded the famous Gravity Train up the mountain to attend the performance at the Sydney B. Cushing Amphitheater, nestled among the forest and grassy hills of Mt. Tam’s northwest face. The Mountain Play Association was established the following year and soon transformed the amphitheater into a 4000-seat, serpentine stone venue that stands to this day.
One hundred years have passed, and the Mountain Play Association—one of the oldest non-profit theater companies in the Bay Area—continues to fill the Cushing Amphitheater each year with renditions of Broadway musicals in a charmingly un-Broadway environment, where people of all ages can picnic, hike, relax in the sun, and enjoy quality musical theater on the mountain. To commemorate the Mountain Play’s centennial anniversary, the Mill Valley Public Library opens its doors on Friday, April 5th, to host Jay Manley, American musical theater scholar and 2013 Mountain Play Director, and Sara Pearson, Executive Director of the Mountain Play Association.
“100 Years of the Mountain Play” will be part presentation, part performance, and part retrospective. Following a free wine reception in the library’s main reading room, Manley will discuss the upcoming production of The Sound of Music, Mountain Play performers will sing selections from past shows, and Executive Director Pearson will speak and show slides of the Mountain Play’s past 100 years. The event will be followed by a question and answer session.
The Library will have a drawing at the event to give away 2 pairs of "good any day" tickets to the Mt. Play. Everyone attending can also go home with a free vintage Mt. Play Tee-shirt. Additionally, guests are invited to view historical photographs and ephemera from 100 years of the Mt. Play's history on display that night and through the end of April in the Library's Lower-Level Art Gallery.

What are First Fridays?
Debuting in January 2011 in celebration of the Library's centennial year, the ongoing "First Fridays" series presents different narratives, ideas and presentations that an audience might otherwise not consider or experience. First Fridays are for adults and high school students.
The Library's Main Reading Room is transformed into a beautiful venue for First Friday events. Built in 1966, the Library is nestled among the redwoods in an award-winning building and reflects the diverse intellectual interests of the community.
Programs typically last 90 minutes (includes Q&A). First Fridays feature a wine reception before and after our program. Patrons enjoy the intimate atmosphere and ability to meet our presenters. Attendance ranges between 115 and 260 people per event.
