The Bay Area Rapid Transit District (BART) is negotiating with several labor unions over contracts that expired on June 30, 2013, and were extended for 30 days. BART workers may go on strike starting Monday August 5. The effect of the strike may result in increased traffic congestion throughout much of the Bay Area as transportation services are disrupted.
In Mill Valley, we anticipate that East Bay residents may decide to use HWY 101 to avoid traffic congestion on the Bay Bridge. This may impact commuters coming into and out of town and could impact surface streets near HWY 101.
The City encourages residents and employers to plan transportation alternatives. We urge employers to review any special transportation plans that they may have and prepare to implement them. The most effective strategies will be to encourage telecommuting from home and to provide flexible work schedules, and to encourage alternative modes of transportation, such as biking. Those employees who must drive likely will find carpooling to be their best option; employees can pre-register for carpool matches by visiting the Rideshare page on www.511.org.
