At their regular meeting last night, the Mill Valley City Council unanimously appointed Stephen Burke to fill the City Council seat vacated by Councilmember Tricia Ossa's recent resignation.
“We are very pleased to welcome Stephen to the City Council,” Mill Valley Mayor John McCauley said. “His strong history of service in many different roles has demonstrated his deep knowledge of the community and commitment to Mill Valley.”
Burke, a Mill Valley resident since 2001, currently serves on the Mill Valley Parks and Recreation Commission, the Marin County Civil Grand Jury, and the Transportation Authority of Marin' s Citizen Oversight Committee. In the past, he has served on the Mill Valley General Plan Committee, Mill Valley Traffic and Congestion Task Force and Board of the Mill Valley Tennis Club, among other civic activities. Burke brings professional experience from a career in business development, public affairs, and sales in the technology sector.
“My experience with various commissions and committees has given me insight into how staff, Council, and the citizens interact and I believe I can use that experience, and my business experience, to bring people together to find common solutions,” Burke said.
“I thank the Council for this appointment and look forward to working with them, staff, and the community on several important issues facing our community,” he said.
Council interviewed four candidates at their regular meeting, asking a series of questions for the applicants to answer. After announcing their selection, Council confirmed that Burke’s appointment will be effective upon being sworn-in at the next regular City Council meeting on September 20, 2021.
“For the people that took the time to apply, I just really want to thank you for taking the time to fill out the application, to come down here and speak with us,” Councilmember Urban Carmel said. “We are very fortunate in our City that we have so many qualified people that were willing to come out and be engaged in our government.”

With the appointment of Stephen Burke, the City will have a vacancy on its Parks and Recreation Commission. An application announcement will be forthcoming.
Shortly after appointment on September 20, new Councilmember Burke will receive orientation information from the Mayor, City Manager, City Clerk, and other Department Heads, as well as an overview on matters such as the City Council's Core Values, Key Issues and Priority Projects, City organization and Commission roles, activities and significant City pending efforts and projects, the Brown Act, and Conflict of Interest laws.
A Special Election for the remainder of the term held by new Councilmember Burke will take place in June 2022.
