[ARCHIVED] Madrona Stairs Neighborhood Meeting

Dense, fire-prone bamboo lines a critical evacuation route

Please join us on October 12 at 6 pm at the base of the steps on Lovell Avenue

The Fire Department invites you to join us for a Neighborhood Meeting regarding the bamboo on the Madrona Stairs.

At the meeting, we will:

  • Share how bamboo is highly flammable and can endanger public safety and nearby homes by creating a fire hazard, necessitating the need to remove sections of bamboo along the City-owned easement and emergency evacuation route.
  • Share the plan to preserve the large/heritage bamboo at the base of the steps and the stand of bamboo around the shrine, provided that they continue to be well-pruned and maintained to effectively manage fuels.
  • Answer your questions and seek your thoughts and ideas.

If you have any questions please contact Fire Inspector Michael St. John at or call (415) 389-4140
