Upcoming Preparedness Events For September and October 2023

September is National Preparedness Month!
This year's theme focuses on preparing older adults for disasters. 25% of Marin County is over the age of 65 and that trend continues to rise. In response to this, we encourage you to review the new guide from ReadyMarin and the Office of Emergency Management. This simple 8-page guide covers resources and includes age-friendly worksheets to get you started. It's important to share your emergency plan with your support network, including family, neighbors, and caregivers. View and download your copy here. Below are a few more tips for older adults to prepare for disasters and emergencies.
  • Fill out the Make a Plan form in the Guide for Older Adults & Carers booklet and share it with your loved ones and caregivers.
  • Plan for transportation before disasters happen. Where will you go and how will you get there? Block Captains can help support older neighbors with their emergency planning.
  • Stay informed by signing up for alerts. Make sure a neighbor and an out of town contact are signed up, too, in case you don't have digital access or miss an alert.
  • If you undergo routine treatments at a clinic or hospital, find out their emergency plans & work with them to identify backup service providers. Do the same for in-home care.
  • Learn to text. Not only do AlertMarin and Nixle text emergency alerts, but a text message can often get through when a phone call can't.
