Under the supervision of the Fire Marshal or Deputy Fire Marshal, the Safety Fire Inspector is responsible for such duties as performing and reviewing building inspections, construction and protection system plan reviews, fire investigations to determine origin and cause, fire code enforcement, meeting with the public for educational purposes. The position will involve, in varying degrees, public education, public relations, weed abatement, record keeping, report writing, and other duties as assigned by the Fire Marshal his or her designee.
The Safety Fire Inspector functions require the application of professional/administrative knowledge of fire code enforcement, fire investigations, and administrative functions. The Safety Fire Inspector is responsible for all Fire District fire investigations related to origin, cause and investigation reports and records. This position may at times be requested to perform fire investigations after hours if and when available and will be compensated overtime at the regular rate of pay anytime requested after hours for a minimum of 2 hours.

- Conduct fire inspections of construction projects, and periodic inspections of residential, commercial, industrial and other facilities to ensure compliance with national, state, and local fire, life safety and related codes and locally adopted ordinances related to the fire code.
- Inspect and test fire suppression and fire detection systems for code compliance according to State, Federal, national and local ordinances.
- Conduct plan reviews for design review, new construction, existing building remodels and additions, fire protection systems, and vegetation management plans to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local codes and standards.
- Interpret codes and regulations and explain permit programs and compliance conditions.
- Maintain a good working knowledge of codes, regulations, construction methods and materials, fire protection systems and detection systems.
- Prepare written correspondence to building owners or tenants regarding violations and required corrective actions.
- Maintain records of inspections for all buildings and assure inspection schedules are given to shift supervisors.
- Investigate complaints and compliance violations regarding fire hazards, hazardous material problems, and related violations.
- Demonstrate types and uses of portable fire extinguishers to building tenants.
- Review applications, issue permits, and receive fees according to the fire prevention fees schedule.
- Assist in developing programs and conduct on-site training in schools, and various public locations.
- Maintain accurate records; prepare correspondence reports, procedures, and other written materials.
Conduct fire investigations
- Respond to fire incidents for fire origin, cause and arson investigations.
- Prepare written fire investigation reports.
- Support the fire district on the Marin County Fire Investigation Team (MCFIT).
- Attends meetings as assigned during normal business hours and will be compensated overtime at the regular rate of pay anytime requested after hours for a minimum of 2 hours.
- Respond to after hour calls if and when available (fire district cell phone provided) and will be compensated overtime at the regular rate of pay anytime requested after hours for a minimum of 2 hours.
Receive and respond to telephone inquiries or complaints; must be able to speak clearly and hear normal conversations; must be able to take messages accurately and pass on information; must be able to handle and process several incoming calls at once; be able to process complaints.
Must have the ability to generate correspondence, reports and documents from rough draft, marginal notes or verbal instructions; must also be able to plan, format and create charts, tables, form letters. Must be able to assume new tasks, as assigned, due to the changing nature of public safety work.
Perform related work as assigned by the Fire Marshal his or her designee.
OTHER JOB-RELATED DUTIES:
Willingness to attend meetings and workshops after normal business hours; be subject to emergency calls at all hours; will be subject to occasional travel out of the County, as required and will be compensated overtime at the regular rate of pay anytime requested after hours for a minimum of 2 hours.
Willingness to be flexible with normal working hours to accommodate after hours and weekend inspections or public education events and will be compensated overtime at the regular rate of pay anytime requested after hours for a minimum of 2 hours.
Must be able to read a map and be able to give and follow directions.
Be able to make copies of all required records: operate copy machine by pressing buttons and inserting paper, adding paper, toner, etc.;
Complete State and government required forms.
Deal with upset people - be able to listen and, perhaps, calm people down.
Must be able to prioritize work projects and have good self-motivational skills.
English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation;
Modern office methods and practices;
Business letter writing and basic report preparation;
Principles and procedures of record keeping;
Perform entry-level fire prevention inspections for a variety of buildings, structures, and installations;
Enforce a variety of codes, ordinances, and regulations pertaining to fire prevention and hazardous materials with firmness and tact;
Read and understand building and site plans;
Identify fire related hazards and recommend corrective actions;
Participate in structured classroom lecture as both student and instructor;
Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees within the Fire District.
Possession of a valid California (Class C) driver's license.
A minimum of a High School diploma or GED.
Possession of a current CPR/AED and First Responder First Aid certification.
Minimum of 1 year fire prevention or fire suppression experience.

Primarily the work is conducted in an office setting. On occasion working in an emergency environment; work in intense, life-threatening conditions; exposure to fire, smoke, bodily fluids, and noise; running, walking, crawling, climbing, stooping and lifting; work in inclement weather conditions.
The Fire District will provide a vehicle for fire inspections / Investigations and other job-related duties.
